Can Tungsten and Titanium Rings Be Resized? (UK Guide)

It is the question that arrives a few days after the parcel does. The ring is beautiful, it is a little tight on the knuckle, and the obvious next thought is to take it somewhere and have it opened up half a size. With a gold or silver band, that is a routine job. With the metals that modern men's rings are actually made from, it usually is not possible at all.

Here is what each material can and cannot do, why, and what to do instead.

Tungsten rings cannot be resized. Not by anyone.

This is not a case of jewellers being unwilling. It is physics.

Resizing a traditional ring works because gold and silver are soft, malleable metals. A jeweller cuts the band, adds or removes a small section, solders the join, then files and polishes it back to invisible. Every step of that depends on the metal bending and melting at temperatures a workshop torch can reach.

Tungsten carbide does none of those things. It is a sintered ceramic-metal compound, not a worked metal: tungsten and carbon particles pressed and fused into shape under heat and enormous pressure. It sits at roughly 9.0 to 9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, close to sapphire, with a Vickers hardness around 2600. It is about three times as stiff as steel and roughly ten times harder than 18 carat gold. A saw blade that cuts gold will not touch it, and there is no solder that bonds it.

There is a second problem. That extreme hardness comes with brittleness. Tungsten carbide resists scratching far better than any precious metal, but it does not bend under a sharp impact. It cracks. Any process that tried to stretch a tungsten band would break it before it moved.

Around a third of our ring range is tungsten, and it accounts for nearly every one of the wedding bands, so this is worth knowing before you order rather than after.

Titanium: technically possible, practically not worth it

Titanium is the more nuanced answer. It is a proper metal rather than a ceramic, so it can be worked. Titanium rings are difficult but possible to resize, and the amount of reduction or increase is limited, usually to about half a size in the hands of a workshop set up for it.

The catch is finding one. Titanium needs an inert gas welding setup and different tooling to the torch-and-solder bench that handles gold, so most high street jewellers will decline the job rather than risk it. Even where a workshop takes it on, the cost of a half size adjustment on a band under fifty pounds rarely makes sense against simply owning the right size.

Anything with an inlay narrows the odds further. Our Antler and Titanium Band sets naturally shed deer antler around a titanium core, and a wood or antler inlay will not survive the heat of a resize. Treat inlaid rings of any material as fixed size.

What about stainless steel?

Most of our rings, including the signet rings and the minimalist bands, are 316L stainless steel. Steel sits between the two: it is a workable metal, but it work hardens as it is manipulated and needs specialist welding rather than standard jewellery solder. Most jewellers treat steel rings the same way they treat tungsten, which is to say they will politely suggest you buy the correct size.

Our rings are sized in US numbers, not UK letters

This trips up more UK buyers than anything else on the sizing page. Every Manful ring is listed in US sizes, running 6 to 13 on most designs, in whole sizes only. There are no half sizes to choose from, and no UK letter option at checkout.

So if you already know your UK letter, you need one conversion step. Inside circumference is the reliable anchor here, because letters and numbers both derive from it.

Two details that decide whether a fixed size ring works

Band width

A wide band touches more of your finger and reads tighter than a narrow one at the same nominal size. Almost all of our tungsten and titanium bands are 8mm wide, while the slimmer steel pieces such as the Line Cut Ring are 6mm. If you measured on a thin sizing ring and you are buying an 8mm band, go up to the next whole size rather than staying put. Half sizes are not on offer, so this is a one step decision either way.

Comfort fit

Every tungsten and titanium band we sell is comfort fit, meaning the inner edge is domed rather than flat. It slides over the knuckle more easily and sits with slightly less contact once on. In practice a comfort fit band feels a touch looser than a flat interior band of the same size, which cancels out some of the width effect above. If you are buying an 8mm comfort fit band and you sit right on a whole size, stay true to your measurement.

When to measure

Fingers are at their smallest first thing in the morning and after cold weather, and largest late in the evening or after exercise. Measure in a warm room at the end of the day. A ring sized on a cold January morning is the ring you cannot get on in July.

If the ring already does not fit

You have 30 days from receiving the item to request a return or an exchange. Any item can be exchanged for a different size, or for a different item of the same value, as long as it is undamaged, unworn and in its original packaging. Two exceptions worth flagging. Personalised and engraved items cannot be exchanged, so if you are ordering a signet ring for engraving, settle the size before you settle the engraving. And items sent back without requesting a return first will not be accepted, so send the email before the parcel.

What if it is stuck on your finger?

There is a persistent myth that a tungsten ring cannot be removed in a medical emergency. The opposite is closer to the truth. Because tungsten carbide is brittle, a pair of locking pliers cracks it off in seconds, whereas a gold band has to be cut through and bent open. Titanium is only slightly harder to cut than traditional jewellery metals, and hospital ring cutters handle it.

Day to day, the usual tricks apply first: cold water, soap or hand cream, and rotating rather than pulling. If the finger is swelling after an injury, do not wait it out.

FAQ

Can a jeweller stretch a tungsten ring by half a size?
No. Stretching relies on the metal deforming, and tungsten carbide cracks rather than deforms. Any workshop offering this is describing a different material.

Can titanium rings be cut off in an emergency?
Yes. Titanium is only slightly more difficult to cut than gold or silver, and standard ring cutters manage it.

Do you sell half sizes?
No. Our rings run in whole US sizes, 6 to 13 on most designs. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one: a slightly loose ring can be worn, a tight one cannot.

Does a wider band need a bigger size?
Usually yes. Moving from a 6mm to an 8mm band at the same nominal size will feel tighter, so go up one whole size unless the band is comfort fit and you measured accurately.

Can I exchange an engraved ring for a different size?
No. Personalised items are excluded from returns and exchanges, so get the size confirmed before ordering engraving.
